A gas flare, also known as a flare stack, flare boom, ground flare or torch, is a gas flaring device used in industrial plants such as refineries, chemical plants, and natural gas processing plants. They are also common in oil or gas production facilities where there are oil wells, gas wells, offshore oil and gas rigs and landfills.

An oil platform, offshore platform or offshore drilling rig is a large structure with equipment for drilling wells for the exploration, production, storage and processing of oil and natural gas that lie in the rocks under the seabed. Many oil platforms will also have accommodations for their workforce. Most often, oil platforms operate on the continental shelf, although they can also be used in lakes, coastal waters and inland seas. Depending on the circumstances, the platform can be attached to the ocean floor, consist of an artificial island or a float. Remote subsea wells can also be connected to the platform with flow lines and umbilicals. These subsea solutions can consist of one or more subsea wells or one or more reservoir centers for multiple wells.
